Sanrio 50th

This week is Sario's big 50th anniversary celebration at Small Gift LA. There's an amazing art show as well which includes work from Eric Joyner, Nouar, Gary Baseman and Joe Ledbetter to name just a few of the 50 artists involved.  It reminded me of two commissions that I did last year and never posted.

"Hello Candy" acrylic on wood

"My Sweet Melody" acrylic on wood

Maybe if I keep at this art thing I might get invited to the 75th anniversary ;)

My Poor Meatball

While walking through B&N looking at magazines I noticed a cover that had a plate of spaghetti. 'Well, now why haven't I done a little meatball boy with a swirl of spaghetti on his head?' I know now. Spaghetti and meatballs are hard.

So I present a little sample of where I started, a video of my progress and where it all ended up. Enjoy :)

I wanted to get specific photo reference for this one so I made up a little batch of meatballs and spaghetti to play around with. A few toothpicks, some strategically placed sauce and about 30 photos later I came up with the first photo. Then on to Photoshop to get the details finalized along with an appropriate background and shadows.

With that done, I printed out a version that was sized to my plaque, traced it and then began to paint.

The finished piece, with some closeups below. The fat reflections on the top of his head are my favorite.

It always amazes me that I have no idea what I'm doing or how I go about painting - I hope for the best and it just happens. Thank goodness it worked out once again ;)

I Need a Vacation

Maybe that's why this little guy decided to come out now after a year of thinking about painting a little coconut character.

"Frou Frou" measures 5 x 7, acrylic on a beveled wood plaque. He's going up for sale on Wednesday, October 27th at 3pm EST in the shop.

A closeup so you can see some of the details. Man those coconut hairs were not neccessarily easy or fun. Very glad that he reads as a coconut though. He does, doesn't he?

So enjoy! and if anyone is sitting on a tropical beach right now enjoying a frou frou drink, think of me ;)

Imps and Monsters, oh my!

Perusing Super Punch this morning and found the art of Justin Hillgrove. I had never seen his work before and am thoroughly in love with it now :D

"Wampa Encore" from his show going on right now, Black and White And Read All Over at Mineral.

"Group Hug" from Imps and Monsters

"Every Little Bit Helps" from his Robot collection

He's so darn prolific it's amazing! Definitely going on my list of loves and inspiration :D

Piebald!

"Piebald! Piebald! Piebald!!" This is what my poor husband woke up to today ;)

I had gotten up and let the dogs out when I spotted something white and brown in the woods. My mind first thought, 'goat', since the coloration seemed to fit a goat best. Then I saw all the other whitetail deer wandering around. My mind then thought, 'mule'. I don't know why it thought that, I guess I was still sleepy.

Turns out it was a whitetail deer with piebald coloration. Looked something like this:

I'm really hoping to see it again and not mind-spaz :)

Q-pot Island Is Awesome

A friend of mine shared this site with me and before I could even ask her where she found it, I was all over it. It's called Q-pot Island and is a line of Japanese accessory shops. This Strawberry Milk Melt ring immediately caught my eye:

As well as this meticulous Rose Cupcake ring:

And this is just the ring portion! They've got necklaces, charm bracelets and such beautifully detailed trinkets as this Choco Biscuit Strap:

And last but not least, the Caviar Ring:

They have an English version of the site, but the online shop is only in Japanese and only ships within Japan. There are three places to get their wares in the states, Ala Moana Center in Hawaii has the largest selection, as well as the MoMA Design Store and Takashimaya in New York City (although limited items).

Either way there seems to be more than enough eye candy to keep me busy for days to come. :D

New Stuff for Small Stuff 4

Just finished up the third piece I'm going to have in Bear and Bird Gallery's Small Stuff 4 show starting November 21st. I was super excited to get the email from Amanda asking me to participate. I just wish I was able to go to the opening :( Oh well, maybe some of you can go for me. :)

"Ole Roastie Chesternut" 5x5 acrylic on wood plaque

"Poison Claw" 6.75 x 6.75 acrylic on wood plaque

"Rad" 5 x 7 acrylic on wood plaque

Also wanted to let everyone know that I decided to make a handful of some new mounted prints. "Pimento Mori", "Nutty" and "L'amour or Less" are now in the shop :D

Spaghetti

I'm working on a new painting that will involve spaghetti. My initial search through Google Images included the following that I thought neccessary to share with all of you.

1. Spaghetti Worm. This little beauty has been removed from his tubular home so you can see how delicious - I mean, awesome, he is! He's a California native, living in Newport's Back Bay

2. Spaghetti Squash Fritters courtesy of Janet Is Hungry. Sure I found lots and lots of delicious pics of spaghetti but this golden nugget of goodness jumped right out at me. Janet has lots and lots of great food pics and recipes to go with them. First page she's got a killer recipe (with pics to match) for a Banana, Peanut Butter, Cinnamon Muffin. Mmmmm...Kristin's hungry too :D

3. Spaghetti and Cheese Ice Cream made by Heladeria Coromoto, a Venezualan restaurant (which has over 800 flavors of ice cream!!!), via Turkey Hill Ice Cream Journal. Reminds me of Ice Cream City in Tokyo where Ed and I sampled Honey, Azuki Bean, Chestnut, Snake and Squid ice creams.

4. Chmurka the Hamster loves spaghetti. Via Flickr

The Angry Pincushion

I just got a lovely little email from Gretchen who writes the Angry Pincushion blog. Seems her mascot, Perry, the angry pincushion, decided he wanted to have green button eyes just like "Cluster Headache". Here's what she wrote:

"I have long admired the artwork of Kristin Tercek of Cuddly Rigor Morits. Her cute yet slightly dark style has me constantly checking her site for her new work. And when Shana Logic sells her prints I squee with delight! One of the prints Shana Logic is currently selling called 'Cluster Headache'-(pictured above, and if you remember I posted about it a couple of weeks ago)- was an instant favorite of mine, for duh reasons. It reminded me so much of my own creation, and fellow tomato pincushion, Perry, that I had to pay homage to the genius of Kristin Tercek with my own interpretation of 'Cluster Headache'. Perry is imitating art in these photos, and he loved it. The photo shoot was done in an old dollhouse of mine, Perry's choice of course, and was a lot of fun!"

How awesome is that? And if you look closely, Gretchen even put the pins and needles and the single green thread on Perry just like the painting.

Many thanks to Gretchen and Perry!

I'm a lucky gal :D
